History of diabetes mellitus

Review Date: January 18, 2010
Reviewer: György Miklós Buzás, Budapest, Hungary
It is an excellent idea to reprint early books on the history, clinical features and treatment of such importrant diseases as diabetes mellitus. Although in 1877, when the book was published, diabetes was a rare condition as compared to its epidemic increase in the past decades, William Morgan provided an excellent overview of the knowledge of his time: many of his or his contemporaries' and forrunners observations are still valid today. A particular flavour of the book is the use of old medical terminology and language. Emphasis is put not only on the clinical data, but also on the treatment of diabetes which consisted in that time in diet, physical exercise and homeopathic methods. The small booklet covers all aspects of 19th century knowledge on diabetes. Science has, however, progressed enormously: today, a textbook covering the history, chemistry, anatomy, pathology, physiology and treatment of diabetes should have at least 1000 pages. Other reprints of early or rare books of medicine would be welcome.
